Earth Science

Earth science (also known as geoscience, the geosciences or the Earth Sciences)

Earth Science is the study of the Planet Earth. The major historic disciplines use physics, geology, geography, mathematics, chemistry, and biology to build a quantitative understanding of the principal areas or spheres of the Earth system.

Scientific study of the Earth Systems generally recognizes 4 spheres, the lithosphere, the hydrosphere, the atmosphere, and the biosphere. These correspond to rocks, water, air, and life. Some scientists classify the crysophere (ice masses on Earth) as a sphere distinct from the hydrosphere and the pedosphere (soil) is also considered a separate sphere by some. So, depending on who you are talking to, Earth has either 4 or 6 separate spheres to study.

Each of these spheres is further broken down into interdisiplinary fields of study. The major areas of scientific fields are:

Earth's spheres

  • Earth (planet) (the whole sphere)
  • Lithosphere
    • Crust (geology)
    • Earth's core
